Another Witch to Burn

Decided to open up a feminist blog based in Edinburgh. I want to catalogue the incidents of men's violence against women as I just don't think it is being taken seriously and I am aware how much there is out there. Please feel free to comment and if you see anything in the press that I haven't posted up please let me know. Please be respectful, though I don't mind robust debate however anything abusive will be taken off.

Your title reminds me of a witch-burning from my hometown:

Three women who had converted to Protestantism got burnt: one gave birth in the heat of the flames and the officials threw the baby back into the fire. This is what can happen in societies where irrational fears and hatreds (of women) flourish.

Good. We need a space to talk about these ideas. I'll try and keep you posted with stuff I see in the West.

The picture is a ink drawing of a witch being burnt on the Royal Mile of Edinburgh - the street where I live, I walk over the old Nor Loch every day to work where 100s of women were drowned for being witches. The murder and torture of witches was violence against women that was condoned by both the state and the community. I know if I was alive in the days of the witch finder I would be brutalised, tortured and murdered for being a witch - for having the cheek to not fit in or to challenge the status quo. I hope my blog works

Excellent blog, Cat. I will promote it in Second Life. Also, Chris, the guy who heads the White Ribbon Campaign in the UK is a member of our Second Life group, SLLU. I'll direct him to this as well.
